Norrbotten Museum Yearbook 2025

4 December 2025

Health and social care

The 2025 yearbook depicts the county's social history with a focus on people's vulnerability - poverty, illness, disabilities and children's upbringing conditions.

The book describes how healthcare facilities were established during the 1800th century, the sanatorium operations in Antnäs, the Spanish flu in Arjeplog in 1920 and Furunäset mental hospital in Piteå. There are descriptions of how the special needs school and preschool activities developed, as well as stories about poverty during the crop failure years of the 1800th century – with examples from both Piteå and Tornedalen.

The museum's yearbook 2025 opened.
Museum yearbook 2025, spread.

One section follows a child who contracts polio and describes his time in an insane asylum in the early 1950s. Another section portrays a deaf-mute boy from Överkalix and his unusual educational journey during the early 1800th century. The book also depicts what life was like for unwed mothers at Karlsvik's maternity and infant home in the 1930s, and what everyday life was like for children at the Salvation Army orphanage in Malmberget at the turn of the last century.
