About the help for the “Children of the North” during the famine year of 1902–1903. How are the crop failure and its consequences portrayed in the Swedish and foreign press? What efforts were made to assist the most vulnerable – the children?
During the summer of 1903, a couple of hundred children from Pajala and Korpilombolo were allowed to travel far south. They were called “The Children of the North” and received a lot of attention in the press. The trips were connected with the relief work after the severe crop failure in the north in 1902. Money and clothes for the children were collected from all over the country, but the charity was seen by the leading actors as a contribution to the ongoing Swedishization of the Tornedalen.
The speaker is Jimmy Gärdemalm, who has written an article with the same name for the museum's yearbook 2025.
