What kind of lives did men and women with various disabilities face in historical times? How were they viewed by those around them? These are questions that are at the center of the lecture - what is fact and what is fiction?

The lecture is based partly on information in church records, through which individual life stories can be reproduced. It is also based on fictional depictions, which provide insight into contemporary perceptions of what a life with a disability could mean.

Lecturer:

  • Catharina Andersson, Associate Professor of History, Department of Ideological and Social Studies, Umeå University.
  • Lotta Vikström, Professor of History, Institute for Ideological and Social Studies, Umeå University.
