In June 1853, the English ornithologist John Wolley arrived in Tornedalen in search of rare bird eggs. He stayed in the area for almost four years and engaged many of the local population to help. In the area, memories of “Munaherra”, in Swedish “Äggherren”, lived on for a long time.

Wolley's meticulous notes and collections were of great importance to early ornithology and remain an important source of knowledge about northern bird life today. Much of what Wolley collected ended up in museums, and some was sold to collectors.

Åke Flygare, a doctor and ornithologist in Vittangi, talks about Wolley's life, work and scientific legacy.
