Iron in the north

Tuesday, May 26 at 6:00 p.m. Finnish time (5:00 p.m. Swedish time) FD Carina Bennerhag lectures at Haparanda Sverigefinska Folkhögskolan on "Iron in the north - advanced steel production among ancient hunter-gatherers".

The lecture presents new research on iron handling among hunter-gatherers in northern Fennoscandia. Based on new archaeological and metallurgical analyses of materials from northern Finland, Sweden and Norway, the long-held view of iron handling as a late phenomenon, primarily linked to agricultural societies and imports through trade, is reexamined. Instead, the research shows that both steelmaking and advanced forging were an integral part of hunter-gatherer societies already around 2,000 years ago, providing new perspectives on the early history of iron and technological knowledge in the region.

The lecture is carried out in collaboration between Norrbotten Museum and Haparanda Sverigefinska folkhögskola. It is held in Svefi's premises, is free of charge and given in Swedish.

The lecture will be streamed on Tornedalen Museum's Youtube channel via this link:
