Welcome to a talk with KG Bergström, about the Russian ravages in northern Sweden in 1809.

KG Bergström has written the book "Nöd och död". The Russian occupation in the north in 1809" where he describes how Russian troops invaded the Swedish mainland in the spring of 1809. It was a dramatic and troubled time in Sweden. The weak Swedish army in Kalix was forced to capitulate, which was the start of the Russian occupation of Norrbotten and Västerbotten.

For the civilian population, 1809 became a year of distress and death. Disease, poverty and famine affected a large part of the population.

Bergström also tells of the Russian atrocities in the early 1700th century, when Kalix church and rectory were looted, the churchwarden and priestess were killed, and the vicar in Övertorneå was beaten to death with his own stick.

The lecture is free of charge and no reservation is required.
