Did you know that iron handling in northern Sweden stretches back further than we previously thought? Researchers have long believed that iron production here began in the 1600th century, but new archaeological finds from the coastal region of Norrbotten reveal something completely different.

Until now, we have not known much about when iron production started in northern Sweden. Researchers have long believed that iron handling here only started with the mining of the 1600th century.
Through archaeological investigations carried out in Norrbotten's coastal area in recent years, unique findings have been found that change this picture. The finds show an advanced know-how in iron handling, where steel
was produced and refined already 2 years ago.

This material is primarily intended as a supplement to other school material on the Iron Age. The focus is on the early Iron Age in Norrbotten, and how new knowledge about iron affected the lives of people at that time. Everything is based on new findings that show that iron manufacturing existed in Norrbotten much earlier than previously thought.
