The Tornedalen region's colorful and beautiful folk painting is completely unique to our region. The painting has its roots in the 1700th century and reached its peak in the 1800th century with many skilled painters who left behind folk furniture and objects with absolutely fantastic decorations and color schemes.
During this lecture, Gunnel Tjäder talks about her work as a folk painter, and especially about the folk painting of the Tornedalen region, which is close to her heart. She talks about the history of painting, her own experiences as a painter, and shows pictures of traditional objects and decorations.
Gunnel Tjäder has her roots in Kitkiöjoki in northern Tornedalen. Since 1996 she has worked as a folk painter and textile craftswoman in Kiruna. She gained her knowledge of older painting techniques and traditional materials through her time as a student of the well-respected conservator Paulus Aili in Risudden.
