Archeology Day 2025

On Sunday, August 31, Archeology Day is organized all over Sweden. This year, Norrbotten's museum and the Sammakko-Lillberget Homeland Association are paying attention to an almost 9000-year-old settlement in Sammakko.

The day begins with a lecture on archaeology in the Gällivare area. At the same time, there will be a story time for children, who will travel back in time. The day ends with a guided tour of a nearly 9000-year-old settlement in Sammakko.

Archaeology Day is held in collaboration between the Sammakko-Lillbergets Hembygdsförening and the Norrbotten Museum.

Program

11.00-12.00 Lecture: Archaeology in the Gällivare area

Join us on a journey back in time from the melting of the ice sheet and learn more about some of the archaeological remains found in Gällivare municipality.
Lecturer: Frida Palmbo, archaeologist at the Norrbotten Museum.
Location: Sammakko-Lillbergets Hembygdsgård in Sammakko.

11.00-11.40: What does an archaeologist do?

What kind of finds do they usually make? What might life have been like in the Stone Age? We examine finds, and with the help of stories we travel back in time together with Annika, an educator at Norrbotten Museum. (approximately 30-40 minutes).

11.40-12.00: Try archaeology bingo

12.00-13.30 Lunch

Sammakko-Lillbergets Local History Association organizes lunch service in the Local History Garden. NOTE - Reservations are required, no later than Tuesday, August 26th.

13.30:15.00 PM - approximately 9000:XNUMX PM Guided tour of the nearly XNUMX-year-old settlement in Sammakko

In the fall of 2020, Norrbotten Museum conducted an archaeological research investigation of a then newly discovered settlement in Sammakko. The settlement turned out to be nearly 9000 years old! Archaeologist Frida Palmbo gives a guided tour of the settlement and talks about the archaeological investigation.

Find the place of residence

  1. Drive north from Sammakko, over the Linaälven.
  2. Follow the forest road for about 1,4 kilometers. Then turn right.
  3. Then follow the road for about 1 kilometer.
  4. Parking is along the road.
  5. We gather for a joint hike to the settlement starting at 13.30:XNUMX p.m.
  6. Hiking takes place in terrain, approximately 300 meters one way.
